TL;DR
- A SERP API runs the search from real browsers and proxies, parses the results page, and returns JSON.
- Cheapest real time: Serper ($1.00 → $0.30 per 1,000). Cheapest overall: DataForSEO's queue ($0.60).
- Most engines and legal cover: SerpApi and SearchApi. Enterprise geo: Bright Data.
- Judge them on success rate, feature coverage (PAA, local pack, AI Overview) and parser freshness, not just price.
Every few months someone on a dev forum asks, “Why would I pay for a SERP API? I can scrape Google in twenty lines of Python.”
They’re right, for about a week.
Scraping Google once is easy. Scraping it ten thousand times a day, from forty countries, without getting blocked, and still parsing correctly after Google quietly redesigns the local pack on a Tuesday, is a full-time job. A SERP API is what you buy when you’d rather someone else had that job.
I did that job for a long time. Here’s how to pick the people who do it now.
What is a SERP API?
SERP stands for search engine results page: everything you see after you hit enter. Organic results, ads, People Also Ask, the local pack, shopping carousels, videos, and now AI Overviews.
Google doesn’t sell this page through a self-serve API. Its last official option, the Custom Search JSON API, is shutting down on January 1, 2027. SERP API companies fill the gap. Behind the scenes they:
- Send your query from a real browser through residential or datacenter proxies in the country you asked for
- Handle blocks, CAPTCHAs and retries
- Parse every block on the page into structured fields
- Return it to you as JSON, usually in a few seconds
Your side of it looks like this:
curl https://google.serper.dev/search \
-H "X-API-KEY: $SERPER_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"q": "best running shoes", "gl": "us"}'
And you get back organic, peopleAlsoAsk, relatedSearches and whatever else Google showed.
Why not just scrape Google yourself?
The scraping is the easy 10%. The hard 90% is keeping it alive: rotating proxies that don’t get burned, rendering pages the way a real browser does, and maintaining a parser for every SERP feature while Google A/B tests layouts constantly. A parser that silently returns empty peopleAlsoAsk fields for a week is worse than one that crashes. For most teams, building this in-house only pays off at very large, very steady volume.
SERP API vs web search API
They sound alike and they’re different products:
- A SERP API returns Google’s page: positions, features, ads. That’s what rank trackers, SEO tools and ad intelligence need.
- A web search API (Brave, Exa, Tavily, Keirolabs) returns its own results, often with page text, built for apps and LLMs.
If an LLM is reading the results, you probably want the second kind. Read best web search APIs instead.
The best SERP APIs compared

| Serper | $1.00 → $0.30 | 2,500 queries | Cheapest real-time Google | |
| DataForSEO | $0.60 queue · $2.00 live | Google, Bing + more | Trial | Lowest cost if you can wait |
| HasData | $1.23 → $0.35 (Light) | 1,000 credits/mo | Cheap volume plans | |
| Zenserp | $2.00 → $0.90 | Google, Bing, YouTube | 50/mo | Simple, AI Overview support |
| SearchApi | $4.00 → $2.00 | Many | 100 requests | Legal responsibility, up to $2M |
| Bright Data | from $1.00 | All major | 5,000/mo | City-level geo at enterprise scale |
| Keirolabs | $5.33 → $1.78 (2 credits) | Google + own index | 750 credits | ~0.2–0.4 s, one key for SERP and own index |
| SerpWow | $12.50 → $3.84 | Many | Trial | Batch scheduling |
| SerpApi | $25 → ~$1.96 | Dozens | 250/mo | Most engines, U.S. Legal Shield |
Prices are from each vendor’s pricing page, November 2, 2026. The fine print that changes your real bill is in SERP API pricing.
What actually separates good SERP APIs
Price is the easy column to sort by. These matter just as much:
- Success rate. What share of requests come back complete? Check whether failed requests are billed. Bright Data, SearchApi and Zenserp say they bill only successes, and Keirolabs auto-refunds credits on Google backend failures.
- Feature coverage. Does it parse People Also Ask, the local pack, shopping, top stories and the AI Overview, or just the ten blue links?
- Parser freshness. When Google changes a layout, how fast is the parser fixed? Look at changelogs and status pages.
- Geo precision. Country only, or city and ZIP? Matters hugely for local SEO.
- Latency. Fine at 5 seconds for a nightly rank check, painful at 5 seconds inside a chatbot.
- Legal posture. Who carries the risk if Google sues? More on that below.
Present-but-empty is the most expensive bug in this business. Test that fields come back filled, not just that the keys exist.
The right SERP API for each job
Rank tracking & SEO tools
DataForSEO queue
$0.60 per 1,000, 45-minute target turnaround. Cheap enough to track a lot of keywords, and a common backend for SEO tools.
Apps & agents needing Google now
Serper
$1.00 per 1,000 to start, $0.30 at volume, and the major agent frameworks already have wrappers for it.
Many engines & verticals
SerpApi or SearchApi
Google, Bing, Baidu, YouTube, Maps, Shopping, Scholar and more. SerpApi is the most complete; SearchApi is cheaper.
Local SEO & geo precision
Bright Data
One of the largest proxy networks behind it, targeting down to city level, billed only on success.
Is it legal to use a SERP API?
Scraping public search results sits in a grey zone, and 2026 kept it interesting. Google sued SerpApi; the case was dismissed in July 2026 without prejudice, so it could return. Reddit’s separate suit against scrapers is still pending.
For now, the legal exposure sits mostly with the vendor. Some sell protection as a feature: SerpApi’s U.S. Legal Shield on higher plans, and SearchApi’s stated legal responsibility with up to $2M in coverage.
If your company’s lawyers are nervous, the answer isn’t a braver scraper. It’s an API with its own index.
Brave, Exa and Keirolabs’ own index sidestep the question entirely.
Pick one in an afternoon
- Take 100 real queries, including the countries and languages you care about.
- Run them through two SERP APIs on the same day.
- Compare success rate, latency, and whether the features you need came back filled in, not just present as empty keys.
- Price the winner at your real volume in the calculator.
Include a few queries you know trigger an AI Overview, a local pack and People Also Ask. Feature coverage is where SERP APIs differ most, and you won’t see it testing “weather in london”.
FAQ
What is the best free SERP API?
For ongoing free use: Bright Data’s 5,000 requests a month and HasData’s 1,000 credits a month. For a one-off test: Serper’s 2,500 signup queries.
Is SerpApi the cheapest?
No. At $25 per 1,000 it has the highest entry price here. You pay for breadth and legal cover. For Google-only, Serper is 25× cheaper at entry level.
Can a SERP API return Google’s AI Overview?
Several can, including DataForSEO and Zenserp (billed at 3 credits). Coverage changes fast, so test it on a query you know triggers one.
What’s the fastest SERP API?
Latency depends on location, options and load, so test it yourself. Among published numbers, Keirolabs documents about 0.2–0.4 seconds for its Google endpoint.
